Biography
Edward Alexander Perkins was born in Ohio and studied music under Lowell Mason and Thomas Hastings in Boston. For a time, he was choir director at Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, D. C., then resided in New Jersey. He was associated with John B. Herbert and Frederic Henry Pease, and participated in singing conventions throughout the northern states. He eventually retired to Portland, Oregon. He died in Portland. He composed a number of hymns and part-songs. Some appeared in the song collections compiled for singing schools and conventions. In 1901, the newspaper “The Oregonian” reported Mr. Perkins had in his possession an anthem he had asked a U. S. Treasury clerk, John Pierpont, to compose for the dedication of the Calvary Baptist in 1866, grandfather of financier John Pierpont “J.P.” Morgan and brother of James Pierpont, composer of “Jingle Bells.”
