Biography
Michael John Kegrize was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, son of a grocer. He showed talent as a youth and travelled to Europe to train in music. He studied privately in Berlin, at the Leipzig Conservatory, and was a pupil of Carl Reinecke and others. He won the Helbig Prize in Leipzig for conducting and his overture “Jeanne d’Arc.” Returning to the U.S., he taught in Philadelphia and was conductor of the musical organization that became the Philadelphia Orchestra. He was hired by the fledgling Seattle Symphony Orchestra when the orchestra expanded in 1907. During his tenure, the orchestra moved to their new home at the newly built Moore Theatre. He died in Manhattan, New York.
