Firstpublished:Codex Calixtinus, 12th century Description:Oldest pilgrim's hymn (hymnus peregrinorum), to St. James (Santiago) of Compostela, from the Codex Calixtinus
1.
Cuando Dios Padre,
Rey del Universo,
Distribuyó los territorios
Entre sus apóstoles
Escogió a Santiago
Para ilustrar España.
(Ref. 1)
Primero entre los apóstoles
Martirizado en Jerusalén
El insigne Santiago
Fue santificado en su martirio.
2.
La Galicia de Santiago
Ruega piadoso tributo
Al pueblo para cuya gloria
Da insigne camino
Que con abundancia de preces
Se cante la Melodía:
(Ref. 2)
«¡Oh Señor Santiago,
Oh Gran Santiago,
Adelante
y arriba
Y que Dios nos proteja!”.
3.
A Santiago rinde culto
Gente del mundo entero
A través del auxilio
Del piadoso Caballero
Hay protección y ayuda
Abundante para todos.
(Ref. 1) // (Ref. 2)
4.
Que los milagros de Santiago
Se revelen a todos
Los que a él acuden
Cuando están en peligro.
Todo el que confía en él
Será liberado de las cadenas.
(Ref. 1) // (Ref. 2)
5.
Oh!, bendito Santiago
Nuestra verdadera fortaleza
Aleja de nosotros los enemigos
Cuida de aquellos
Que confían en ti
Que te seamos gratos.
(Ref. 1) // (Ref. 2)
6.
Esperemos que Santiago
Nos otorgue su perdón,
Y siempre obsequiosos
Al mérito que le debemos.
A Padre tan excelso
Dignas alabanzas demos
Amen. // (Ref. 1) // (Ref. 2)
1.
When [God] the Father,
King of the universe.
Distributed the provinces
Justly to the Apostles
He chose James
To bring the light to Spain.

Martyred in Jerusalem
James is sanctified
By his holy martyrdom.

Galicia requested
The pious action of James
His glory is a beacon
For the crowds of people
So that often
They pray while singing.

Great Saint James
Patron of Santiago
Let us go further

Gives thanks to James,
Knight of piety.

By his miracles
James reveals himself
To those who implore him
In the midst of danger.
The one who hopes in him
Will be released from his chains.

O Saint James,
Our true strength,
Keep enemies away from us
Protect thine own

Come with hope,
And for what we owe
