Philomela sings
Nature’s vesper lay;
On the light Zephyr gale it wings
From earth to heaven, and melts in sighs away.

Artless Minstrel, hail!
Nature’s songster, hail!
Lovely Nightingale!
la, la, la, la, la!

When the lark’s sweet lays
Greet returning light,
Nature sings, her theme is Morning’s praise;
In thine I hear the voice of night.

Melodies like thine,
Not in vain were given,
Sacred thoughts with sacred lays entwine,
And praise ascends in song to heaven.
