All steadfast on the sunken rock,
The grin old lighthouse braves
The blows of time and tempest shock,
The clutch of angry waves.

The fury of the mighty deep,
The wrath of raging gale
Against that stern embattled keep
Are hurled without avail.

Aloft the beacon brightly beams
Against the murky night,
And sends its friendly glowing beams
To guide the ship aright.

“Keep clear,” its warning signal reads,
“For death lurks at my feet!”
The watchful sailor sees and heeds
And trims his straining sheet.
