English text
The sun had sunk in the crimson west,
And earth in her twilight robe was dressed;
The soft note rose from the distant hills,
The nightly song of the Whippoorwill.
Whippoorwill, Whippoorwill,
The nightly song of the Whippoorwill.
That voice to me from an angel seems,
It brings to the mind my childhood dreams,
As thoughts of mingled sweetness thrill
That listens to the soft Whippoorwill.
I love that voice, O, I love to hear
Its music, so fills the night air clear,
What care the heart’s rude passions still;
Its nightly song of the Whippoorwill.
