It has been suggested that the tune on which this work is based is by Segundo Cueva Celi and therefore copyright. However, there appears to be no reliable basis to this claim. When arranging the work, Mr Brooks-Davies investigated the authorship of the melody and (due to frequent mention that its authorship is traditional and thus public domain) came to the conclusion that he was free to arrange it.

<!-- other options include: Opus number, arranger, catalog number, larger work, listing of movements, etc. --> Douglas Brooks-Davies writes: The attribution to Segundo Cueva Celi seems problematic, and I take strong objection to the tone of Mr Nottingham's comment, which suggests deliberate carelessness on my part ('he doesn't even know the composer's name'). The website Mr Nottingham cites does indeed appear to contain a claim, dated December 2006, that Celi and his estate own the copyright of the piece. However, when I submitted my arrangement in 2004, all available websites and other sources I consulted described the piece as either 'traditional Spanish' or traditional Latin American (Cuban, etc.). They still do. I never at any point came across Celi's name in connection with it or anything else. I note that it appears now to have been appropriated by the Cheetah Girls and thus to have entered the public domain; I also note that Howard Goodall has, currently, a Christmas CD out with his arrangement on it, where it is described as 'Traditional Spanish'. One wonders what Mr Nottingham thinks he is up to with his particular brand of pedantry.

The composer is Segundo Cueva Celi from Ecuador and not Douglas Brooks-Davies as attributed here. The piece is copy righted and it appears that you do not have the right to publish it, since you did not even have the the real composer's name. see the website under external websites<br>

A la nanita nana,
a lullaby for the holy Infant,
See, baby Jesus sleeps, blessed little baby, blessed holy Child.
Fountain runs clear as crystal, rills gently trickling,
Nightingale sings in forests, trills softly sounding,
While quietly, so quietly, His cradle’s rocking.
A la nanita nana, the baby Jesus.

Roses and lilies in abundance surround Him,
And the breezes softly play, as the Infant smiles in His sleep.
Red and white remind us of wine and bread, sacrifice to come,
As Mary cradles His head.
Fleddings and fountains and all the breezes that gently whisper
Wonder at the little Babe as He smiles in His sleep.
Red and white remind us of wine and bread,
Cross and death to come,
While Mary cradles His head.
While quietly, so quietly, His cradle’s rocking.
A la nanita nana, the baby Jesus.

While the cradle’s rocking.
