Edition notes: Transcribed from The Waterhouse Manuscript, 1780-1781, as "Spencer". This variant of Bolton by William Billings, 1778 has time 3:2 rather than 6:8, the stanza has been shortened to 66. 664., and rhythm and harmony have been simplified. Perhaps this version was used as a teaching version for early students by some singing master – perhaps Billings himself. One stanza of Wesley's hymn included.
