John Wainwright was born in Stockport in 1723, and baptised at St Mary's Church on 14 April 1723, the son of John Wainwright, 'joyner', and his wife Mary. He married Anne Clarkson, also of Stockport, at St. Peter's, Blackley on 30 December 1746. His only known musical publication is A Collection of Psalm Tunes, Anthems, Hymns, and Chants: it can be dated by an advertisement in the Manchester Mercury on 21 October 1766, which describes the book as 'This day published'.
