General Information

The numbering of psalm 115 is a complex issue. The Latin (and Greek) psalm 113 erratically combines Hebrew psalms 114 and 115. Conversely, Latin psalms 114 and 115 are actually two halves of one and the same Hebrew text, psalm 116. Psalm 115 (?) is one of the fine examples of numerical references in the Book of Psalms, though only few instances are transmitted in the translations. The one remaining is the 7 shortcomings of the heathens:

  • they have a mouth, but do not speak
  • they have eyes, but do not see
  • they have ears, but do not hear
  • they have a nose, but do not smell
  • they have hands, but do not feel
  • they have feet, but do not walk
  • they do not make a sound in their throat.

Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 113b)

10  super misericordia tua et veritate tua;
20  Dominus memor fuit nostri, et benedixit nobis. Benedixit domui Israël;
benedixit domui Aaron.

1  Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy Name give the praise:
  for thy loving mercy and for thy truth's sake.
2  Wherefore shall the heathen say: Where is now their God?
3  As for our God, he is in heaven: he hath done whatsoever pleased him.
4  Their idols are silver and gold: even the work of men's hands.
5  They have mouths, and speak not: eyes have they, and see not.
6  They have ears, and hear not: noses have they, and smell not.
7  They have hands, and handle not; feet have they, and walk not: neither speak they through their throat.
8  They that make them are like unto them; and so are all such as put their trust in them.
9  But thou, house of Israel, trust thou in the Lord: he is their succour and defence.
10  Ye house of Aaron, put your trust in the Lord: he is their helper and defender.
11  Ye that fear the Lord, put your trust in the Lord: he is their helper and defender.
12  The Lord hath been mindful of us, and he shall bless us: even he shall bless the house of Israel,
he shall bless the house of Aaron.
13  He shall bless them that fear the Lord: both small and great.
14  The Lord shall increase you more and more: you and your children.
15  Ye are the blessed of the Lord: who made heaven and earth.
16 . All the whole heavens are the Lord's: the earth hath he given to the children of men.
17  The dead praise not thee, O Lord: neither all they that go down into silence.
18  But we will praise the Lord: from this time forth for evermore. Praise the Lord.

Luther 1912

5  Sie haben Mäuler, und reden nicht; sie haben Augen, und sehen nicht;
6  sie haben Ohren, und hören nicht; sie haben Nasen, und riechen nicht;
12  Der HERR denkt an uns und segnet uns; er segnet das Haus Israel, er segnet das Haus Aaron;
17  Die Toten werden dich, HERR, nicht loben, noch die hinunterfahren in die Stille;

4  Hunlieder afgoden zijn zilver en goud, het werk van des mensen handen;
5  Zij hebben een mond, maar spreken niet; zij hebben ogen, maar zien niet;
6  Oren hebben zij, maar horen niet; zij hebben een neus, maar zij rieken niet;

PART 1
The true God our refuge; or, Idolatry reproved (L. M.)
Not to ourselves, who are but dust,
Not to ourselves is glory due,
Eternal God, thou only just,
Thou only gracious, wise, and true.

Shine forth in all thy dreadful name;
Why should a heathen's haughty tongue
Insult us, and, to raise our shame,
Say, "Where's the God you've served so long?"

The God we serve maintains his throne
Above the clouds, beyond the skies;
Through all the earth his will is done;
He knows our groans, he hears our cries.

But the vain idols they address
Are senseless shapes of stone and wood;
At best a mass of glittering ore,
A silver saint or golden god.

With eyes and ears they carve their head;
Deaf are their ears, their eyes are blind;
In vain are costly off'rings made,
And vows are scattered in the wind.

Their feet were never made to move,
Nor hands to save when mortals pray;
Mortals that pay them fear or love
Seem to be blind and deaf as they.

O Israel! make the Lord thy hope,
Thy help, thy refuge, and thy rest;
The Lord shall build thy ruins up,
And bless the people and the priest.

The dead no more can speak thy praise,
They dwell in silence and the grave;
But we shall live to sing thy grace,
And tell the world thy power to save.

PART 2
To the tune of the 50th Psalm. Popish idolatry reproved. A Psalm for the Fifth of November (10,10,10,10,10,10)
Not to our names, thou only just and true,
Not to our worthless names is glory due;
Thy power and grace, thy truth and justice, claim
Immortal honors to thy sovereign name:
Shine through the earth from heaven, thy blest abode
Nor let the heathens say, "And where's your God?"

Heaven is thine higher court, there stands thy throne,
And through the lower worlds thy will is done;
Our God framed all this earth, these heavens he spread;
But fools adore the gods their hands have made:
The kneeling crowd, with looks devout, behold
Their silver saviors, and their saints of gold.

Vain are those artful shapes of eyes and ears;
The molten image neither sees nor hears;
Their hands are helpless, nor their feet can move,
They have no speech, nor thought, nor power, nor love;
Yet sottish mortals make their long complaints
To their deaf idols and their moveless saints.

The rich have statues well adorned with gold;
The poor, content with gods of coarser mold,
With tools of iron carve the senseless stock,
Lopped from a tree, or broken from a rock;
People and priest drive on the solemn trade,
And trust the gods that saws and hammers made.

Be heaven and earth amazed! 'Tis hard to say
Which is more stupid, or their gods or they:
O Israel, trust the Lord; he hears and sees,
He knows thy sorrows and restores thy peace;
His worship does a thousand comforts yield,
He is thy help, and he thy heavenly shield.

O Britain, trust the Lord: thy foes in vain
Attempt thy ruin, and oppose his reign;
Had they prevailed, darkness had closed our days,
And death and silence had forbid his praise:
But we are saved, and live; let songs arise,
And Britain bless the God that built the skies.
