General Information

The numbering of psalm 115 is a complex issue. The Latin (and Greek) psalm 113 erratically combines Hebrew psalms 114 and 115. Conversely, Latin psalms 114 and 115 are actually two halves of one and the same Hebrew text, psalm 116. Psalm 115 (?) is one of the fine examples of numerical references in the Book of Psalms, though only few instances are transmitted in the translations. The one remaining is the 7 shortcomings of the heathens:

• they have a mouth, but do not speak
• they have eyes, but do not see
• they have ears, but do not hear
• they have a nose, but do not smell
• they have hands, but do not feel
• they have feet, but do not walk
• they do not make a sound in their throat.
