O Lord, I am not puff'd in mind,
I have no scornful eye, | |||
I do not exercise myself
In things that be too high:
But as a child that weaned is
E'en from his mother's breast,
So have I, Lord, behav'd myself
In silence and in rest. | |||
O Israel, trust in the Lord,
Let him be all thy stay, | |||
From this time forth for evermore,
From age to age alway. | |||

<poem> | |||
O Lord, I am not proud of heart,
Nor cast a scornful eye;
Nor my aspiring thoughts employ
In things for me too high.
With infant innocence thou know'st
I have myself demean'd;
Compos'd to quiet, like a babe
That from the breast is wean'd.
Like me let Israel hope in God,
His aid alone implore: | |||
Both now and ever trust in him,
Who lives for evermore.

General Information
Psalm 131 is part of the Song of Ascents, the series of 15 psalms symbolizing the 15 steps of the temple in Jerusalem. They are often claimed to have been pilgrimage songs, though there is no substantial evidence to support this. As a sequel to psalm 130, it is built around the concept of hope - the numerical value of this word in Hebrew (30) is matched by the number of words in the Hebrew text.

Texts & translations
Church of England 1662 Book of Common PrayerEnglish text 1 Lord, I am not high-minded: I have no proud looks. 2 I do not exercise myself in great matters: which are too high for me. 3 But I refrain my soul, and keep it low, like as a child that is weaned from his mother: 4 O Israel, trust in the Lord: from this time forth for evermore. |
Káldi fordításHungarian text 1 Dávid éneke a fölmenetekre. |
